THE WAVE

276 MEGAPIXEL VAST PHOTO
The Wave, Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness, Arizona

The geological formation called The Wave located in the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness is considered a must for landscape photographers. It’s a beautiful, unique, and mystical place, but it’s extremely difficult to get to. No, I don’t mean the hike. I would categorize the hike as fairly easy. But remember when I say that, everything is relative, and I’ve been on some gruesome hikes. So, take anything thing I say in this regard with a grain of salt.

No, the difficulty is in obtaining the necessary permit to visit the site. The permitting process is a lottery drawing. There are a couple ways to participate in the lottery, one of which is in person. The in-person lottery is held in Kanab, in a gymnasium, by the Bureau of Land Management.

During this trip to the area, visiting The Wave wasn’t even on my radar, even though I’d never been there. I had some other agendas. But I found myself literally driving by the location of the in-person lottery on the actual day it was to be held. So, I figured, why not give it a shot. I registered, then took a seat among the other five million people vying for the few permits they were awarding that day. I didn’t actually count every person, but there were a lot.

A gentleman seated next to me started up a conversation. Apparently he had been coming to the lottery regularly for five years and had never landed a permit. I told him I was just passing by and this was my first time. Probably shouldn’t have said that.

Well, you can guess the rest of the story. Let’s just say I’m pretty sure the gentleman seated next to me needed restraining after the announcement of my obtaining a permit. Sorry, but not sorry.

Title Origin: The term “The Lull” comes from the surfing world. That calm place between ocean waves is referred to as “The Lull” by surfers.” The flat sandy place seen in the middle of the photo is the main area encountered once you arrive at The Wave. I call it “The Lull” and standing in this calm place you are surrounded by the tumult of wonderful wave formations and undulating rock that is The Wave. Similar, I would say to a surfer’s “Lull.”

So, if you and I are ever at the The Wave and we get separated, let’s just plan to meet back at The Lull in a couple hours. Works for me. And in the meantime, I hope you enjoy this VAST Ultra High-Resolution Image.

Thanks ... and thanks again,

David David

VAST Print™

A VAST Print™ represents the pinnacle of the photographic medium. Each print is a true photograph created specifically for you using light-sensitive paper exposed in a darkroom with the industry's highest precision exposure technique. Your print is then sealed with a shine-enhancing protective glossy coating*, adhered to a sturdy aluminum composite backing, and finished in one of two ready-to-hang formats:

  • Frameless floating display: A hidden mounting brace on the rear gracefully "floats" the print off the wall for a sleek, modern look.
  • Framed display: The print is mounted inside one of our handcrafted 100% wood frames with a decorative separation between the print and the frame so that the print appears to be floating within the frame, providing depth and elegance to the finished photo.

*Note: a non-glossy, satin matte coating is alternatively available on request.
