Arches National Park is a magical place. It was here years ago that I first began to develop my skill in creating Ultra High-Resolution Imagery. On most days the art of Ultra High-Resolution Imagery is an immensely advanced, challenging, and technical photographic discipline. But Arches National Park can sometimes make it “easy.” Easy in that, if all other conditions are favorable, rocks tend not to move. They’re relatively cooperative subjects sitting calmly and quietly while you practice getting better at your craft.
On this particular day in Arches, years after getting those fundamentals of Ultra High-Resolution Imagery nailed down, I was set up in a familiar spot overlooking Delicate Arch. Familiar spot to me, but not to most. Having a propensity for being off-trail has provided me the opportunity to photograph from vantage points generally not utilized by others. And when faced with photographing an icon such as Delicate Arch, it’s always the challenge to see it somehow differently. So, even though I had photographed this very scene several times prior, who knows, today something magical might happen.
Something magical did happen.
I have a friend that has a saying applicable to another arena of life, but I think it can be applied to photography as well. He says, “Just show up!” And sometimes in photography, all you have to do is just show up, and sometimes show up, and show up, and show up, and …
Title Origin. The iconic Delicate Arch acquired its name due to it being precarious in its formation. One day, due to erosion, it may not be with us any longer. But Delicate Arch’s delicateness is nothing like the clouds that temporarily arched the icon this day. I had to work fast, and within minutes, the clouds were gone. One delicate arch gone, another one with us for now to be enjoyed. I initially thought of titling this piece Double Arch, but that name was already taken. Those familiar with Arches National Park will get that.
