Remember the old TV commercial where a little girl and her Daddy are watching a sunset. As the sun dropped below the horizon she says "Do it again Daddy". That is exactly the feeling I had on this evening as we watched this sunset. I wanted to say to my Heavenly Father to "Do it again Daddy". Each and every day He creates unique sunrises & sunsets that will never be repeated. This was one of His masterpieces.
Point Sublime is a point on the North Rim most visitors to the Grand Canyon never see because it is at the end of a pretty rugged 12 mile long 4x4 trail that is only accessible with a 4 wheel drive vehicle. This was my second attempt to photograph this location. The first time I visited this location a year earlier, the entire canyon was fogged in and you couldn't see more than 100 yards.
Late July is know as the Monsoon season in the SW region. When we arrived around 5:30pm this day it was fully overcast. I was afraid that this time was going to be a bust too. As we waited for the sunset I could see that there was a thin gap of clear sky near the horizon. Anticipating that the sun might peek through this gap near sunset I sat up in hope of getting a shot.
Knowing that the canyon would be quite dark with the overcast skies, I decided to shoot a bracketed set of images anticipating that HDR (High Dynamic Range) processing would be needed to capture the bright sunset and the dark light in the deep canyons.
I waited and thankfully, right on que, the sunlight began to shine through and under the clouds. I started shooting the sequence of 525 Bracketed images at the far left hoping that the sun would be in a good location when I got to the right side. As it worked out, the sun was perfectly positioned with Crepuscular Rays of light reflecting off of the clouds and into the canyon.
