I took this VAST photo of the boardwalk in the Wild Gardens of Acadia in Acadia National Park, Maine on September 30, 2014, 11:39 AM, while teaching a fall photography workshop in the rain. I shot it at 200mm f/4 for a very thin depth of field, sometimes called a “bokehrama”. It has a 3D appearance where objects close to the lens and far away in the distance are completely out of focus, similar to looking through a View-Master when you were a child. It is about the perspective of a 50mm f/1.0 lens (or 80mm on medium format), and has the characteristic look of a large format camera but with a much higher resolution.
Equipment used: Nikon D700, Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II, Hoya Pro1D circular polarizer, and Really Right Stuff TVC-34L tripod w/ leveling base & multi-row panning head. Shot at 200mm, f/4, ISO 800, and 1/60 shutter speed.
Camera settings: 200mm, f/4, ISO 800, 1/60.
Stitching data: 5 rows of 7 images.
