A portion of the famous dive site “Bloody Bay Wall” is captured in this life-size photomosaic, assembled manually from hundreds of 35mm slides taken with a Nikonos V camera mounted on a custom underwater platform.
Bloody Bay Wall is a unique underwater formation in the reef walls surrounding Little Cayman Island, where the reef wall are steep and shear. The reef here is vertical, and the walls are so steep as to be nearly flat as the side of a tall building for almost a mile. At the heart of this super-resolution image is a magnificent cluster of of sheet corals and a large Nassau Grouper being “cleaned” by smaller fish, who trade services by removing parasites on the grouper’s body in return for a meal.
The vertical reef is teeming with various forms of corals in hues of green, orange, and brown, interspersed with vibrant red and yellow sponges. Small, colorful marine creatures, including numerous reef fish, a sea turtle, coral crabs are integrated into the composition, contributing to the lively and bustling environment. The texture and intricate details of the coral formations and marine life are meticulously rendered, capturing the richness and complexity of a healthy reef ecosystem.
