This underwater image was one of the first "stitched" images ever created, produced from hundreds of images captured on transparency film, years before digital cameras and stitching software became available. Using specialized equipment and techniques derived from seafloor mapping, the image was the highest resolution image of a coral reef ever captured, and perhaps the very first "gigapixel image" ever produced.
Photographed in July 1999, this 1.77 gigapixel image was captured in over 280 individual frames combined to create a composite image that is detailed enough to produce a high quality print that is life size - 20 feet high and over 65 feet in width. The image was first published in National Geographic Magazine ("Portrait of a Coral Reef" October 2001).
Bloody Bay Wall is part of a protected marine park on the north side of Little Cayman Island, where just a few hundred yards offshore, the sea floor ends abruptly at a depth of only 18 - 25 feet, dropping off in a shear vertical cliff. Due to the remoteness of this tiny island, and protection as a marine sanctuary, this one of the most pristine coral reef ecosystems.
