The Moth and The Appleblossom

A multilayered botanical portrait of a singular moth fluttering above apple-blossom, at night.

In this timeless composition, Anja seeks to explore the rich complexity that hides within this imagery. Moths hold a significant position in the Native American culture. Many tribes like the Hopi used these insects, their dance, and forms on their pottery. For the Blackfoot people, these winged insects represent sleep, dreams, and souls of the dead.
Native Americans believe that both butterflies and moths teach us there must always be death for rebirth and growth to occur. These winged creatures encourage us to release singular ego attachments and make room for the rich complexity of our authentic nature.
Since moths are nocturnal and come out at night, they are the teachers and guides of the dreamtime, of the repressed shadow aspects of ourselves, and our disowned wilder nature.

The Druids regarded the apple tree as charmed because of its ability to transform. They marvelled at the awe-inspiring blossoms that changed into an equally magnificent fruit, which also had the power of longevity since it remained fresh when stored. The Druids believed that eating an apple could transport them to a paradisal nether-world. Then through fermentation and pressing, it became hard cider which when drunk transformed the drinker!

Print only

Our photographic prints are created using a specialty, large-format fine art printer designed to produce archival, museum-grade prints. They are true "chromogenic" prints: light-sensitive paper exposed in a darkroom using state-of-the-art lasers to produce the sharpest possible image. Click on the icons below to learn more or click here to explore further.

Our photographic prints are available in one of two finishes: glossy and lustre. Glossy prints have a rich, silky saturation and are great for environments where the lighting and reflections have been carefully thought through. Lustre prints have a bright, sparkle-like finish that diffuses reflections and are therefore more versatile for environments where the lighting and reflections are less under your control.

Your print comes with two certificates of authenticity hand-signed by the artist and the printmaker: one that you will affix to the finished piece and one that remains standalone. Additionally, your print's provenance is tracked and verified using state-of-the-art digital technology. Learn more.
