The Fire Forest – Lake Superior Sunset Sets Forest Ablaze.
Yosemite National Park annually has an interesting occurrence called the Firefall. Each February the sun hits Horsetail Falls in such a way that the falls appear to be on fire as if lava was cascading down to the valley floor.
While hiking in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, specifically the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, I stumbled upon a somewhat similar occurrence. Under the right conditions e.g. time of year, time of day, and climate conditions, a sunset off Lake Superior can light up this section of forest in a brilliant manner. The forest becomes ablaze in red! The “climate conditions” part of the equation is simply that, like Yosemite, all the atmospheric conditions need to be right to produce a great sunset. Overcast skies and you get nothing.
To make it even more interesting, from this photo location Lake Superior is not even visible and this section of forest is inland some hundreds of yards. How the sun pierces through to illuminate the trees is amazing. One would never think it possible.
Title Origin: Playing off the Yosemite Firefall phenomenon seemed the logical choice.
As with all VAST imagery the detail is uncanny and meant to be enjoyed. In this image be sure to notice in one of the closeups the moth on the tree bark.
