582 MEGAPIXEL VAST PHOTO
Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Texas
2022 will mark the fiftieth anniversary of Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Established in 1972 this park is located just over the state line from New Mexico in Texas, we were able to include this park on our trip to visit the other New Mexico national parks. This image, taken from the lookout off of Highway 62 is of El Capitan, the highest point in the Guadalupe Mountains. It is the 8th highest peak in Texas at just over 8,000 ft above sea level. There is no formal trail to the top of the peak so most people prefer to appreciate its beauty from the lookout area.
The horizontal lines running across the base of El Capitan are actually an exposed limestone reef from the Cretaceous Period during which this area was covered by an inland sea. The sea left behind salt deposits as it evaporated over time and local residents would travel to this area to gather salt for personal and agricultural uses until the area was claimed as private land in 1877 leading to the short but violent El Paso Salt War.
It wasn’t until 1928 when US Highway 62 was built to connect Carlsbad, New Mexico to El Paso, Texas that this area would become easily accessible to the masses. Long before this area would become a national park visitors on their way to Carlsbad Caverns National Park would stop along the lookouts and marvel at El Capitan and the other peaks along the route.
This VAST photo was taken just minutes before the sunset, with the last warm light of the day hitting the mountains and valley below. It’s challenging to capture how grand and impressive this scene truly is.
