Saint Peter’s Square is the public welcoming center of Vatican City, the papal seat of the Catholic Church, and it lies directly in front of Saint Peter’s Basilica. At the center of the square is an uninscribed Egyptian obelisk made of red granite, known as the Vatican Obelisk. This obelisk was originally erected in Heliopolis, Egypt, and was later moved by two different Roman emperors, eventually being placed along the spina at the center of the Circus of Nero, which was located on this site during ancient times. Encircling the square are the colossal Doric colonnades, which are made to welcome the masses into the “maternal arms of Mother Church.” The perspective of this image, showing the encircling of the colonnades opening wide and the points of the dome of Saint Peter’s Basilica and the cross atop the obelisk reaching into the starry sky, is made to reflect this idea of the church welcoming the masses of the earth into the embrace of the heavens.
