In this VASTphoto you can admire the splendid setting of Lake Moncensio, on the border between Italy and France, in the Maurienne region.
This area is one of the most beautiful in the western Alps, famous not only for its villages, but also for its history.
Originally there were two small natural lakes separated by dozens of small waterfalls. The human development of the area meant a considerable increase in the demand for electricity and so a first dig was created. Electricity was not enough yet, so a second dam was built, visible in the photo on the left: this large dam changed the original landscape forever by submerging the sedentary villages, the old road and countless buildings including the famous hospital for soldiers, wanted by Napoleon.
Every year in May, the lake is lowered and it is possible to visit the muddy bottom.
It is said that Hannibal passed through this pass when he came to Italy to conquer it.
