173 megapixels! A very high definition VAST photo of the September 11th 9/11 Tribute in Light memorial, the World Trade Center, and the Manhattan city skyline in New York City; created by Dan Piech

Tribute in Light II

Lower Manhattan, New York City
In the 15 years since the September 11th attacks, an undeterred New York has rebuilt, led by the memory of the original World Trade Center. The new World Trade Center complex, a series of buildings comprising the dramatic centerpiece of the downtown skyline, is a great representation of America's unshakable spirit in the face of adversity.

Every year, on September 11th, the city illuminates the "Tribute in Light," an installation of 88 powerful spotlights projecting 616,000 watts of light from lower Manhattan into the night sky. This creates two heavenly columns that ascend, seemingly forever - a stunningly beautiful and iconic testament to bravery, sacrifice, and resilience.

After creating a VAST photo of the Tribute in Light from Jersey City, I traveled up the Hudson River to the Hoboken waterfront, which also boasts an impressive view of the skyline. The air was unusually dry for a summer evening, which provided for a beautifully clear atmosphere free from the diffuse orange glow of city lights that typically fills the sky. It's rare to get a summer evening so dry - and the photographic effect was stunning: enhancing the contrast, sharpness, hues, and impact of the scene.

As I began creating this VAST photo, a large group of young children stood in awe against the railing of the pier I was on. They had never seen the original World Trade Center and, to them, September 11th was something they read about online for history class. A few of their parents began telling stories about their experiences in the city on the day of the attacks. One of the fathers told of how he went to a pier downtown and helped unload relief supplies from boats. A mother recounted a story of how she opened up her bathroom to people covered in dust and debris.

One theme remained constant throughout all of the stories: the fact that all New Yorkers rallied together and gave of themselves to help in any way they could. That's the spirit that embodies the beautifully rebuilt downtown New York skyline and the annual Tribute in Light memorial.

15% of the proceeds from this photo will be donated to 9/11 memorial events through the New York Community Trust, the highest-rated 9/11-related charity.

Print only

Our photographic prints are created using a specialty, large-format fine art printer designed to produce archival, museum-grade prints. They are true "chromogenic" prints: light-sensitive paper exposed in a darkroom using state-of-the-art lasers to produce the sharpest possible image. Click on the icons below to learn more or click here to explore further.

Our photographic prints are available in one of two finishes: glossy and lustre. Glossy prints have a rich, silky saturation and are great for environments where the lighting and reflections have been carefully thought through. Lustre prints have a bright, sparkle-like finish that diffuses reflections and are therefore more versatile for environments where the lighting and reflections are less under your control.

Your print comes with two certificates of authenticity hand-signed by the artist and the printmaker: one that you will affix to the finished piece and one that remains standalone. Additionally, your print's provenance is tracked and verified using state-of-the-art digital technology. Learn more.
