THE OUTDOORS IS CALLING: CROPPED

441 MEGAPIXEL VAST PHOTO
Ridgway R-2, Colorado

This image was three years in the making.

I had been visiting this location on National Forest land near the beautiful San Juan Mountains in Southwest Colorado for three straight years. It made for a great base camp while photographing fall colors in the area. I’d spend a couple weeks each year here exploring photo-op locations and backpacking the various wilderness areas. After a day hike or prolonged periods in the backcountry I always returned to this spot to regroup.

The first year it was obvious this grove of aspens, a minute walk from where I pitch my tent, would make for a promising Ultra High-Resolution Image. My first attempt turned out good and I was satisfied. That is, until I noticed that the area was a thoroughfare for elk, particularly bulls during the rutting season.

So the decision was made. Each evening I was in camp I’d set up across the meadow and photograph the aspens, all the while waiting and hoping for the right opportunity to come along. Over the course of three years I shot a lot of useless images. Not that untypical though. Good photographers often go through hundreds and hundreds of reject images prior to capturing what works. Eventually, as evident by this Ultra High-Resolution Image, the right opportunity did indeed present itself.

The detail of the image, as is the hallmark of Ultra High-Resolution Imagery, is stunning. What’s revealed is that the elk must have been in a recent scrum with a rival. Looking closely, one notices a bit of blood on one antler along with what is probably a tuft of rival fur. I tend to think of the bugling as his invitation to join him in his revelry.

Persistence and imagination are often required to transform a photo from a good image, to a great one. I could have settled for just a good image of some aspens instead of an epic image with aspens and a bugling elk.

Title Origin: Given my work with the non-profit the Outdoors for Everyone Project the title for this piece came easy. Through imagery, it’s the non-profit’s objective to ensure everyone gets to experience the great outdoors, whether they can physically get there or not. So, the outdoors IS calling, and it’s my hope that you get to experience it. And if for some reason you can’t get there, you can still experience it through a VAST Ultra High-Resolution Image. There’s at least one elk that’s personally inviting you.

Thanks ... and thanks again,

David David

Print only

Our photographic prints are created using a specialty, large-format fine art printer designed to produce archival, museum-grade prints. They are true "chromogenic" prints: light-sensitive paper exposed in a darkroom using state-of-the-art lasers to produce the sharpest possible image. Click on the icons below to learn more or click here to explore further.

Our photographic prints are available in one of two finishes: glossy and lustre. Glossy prints have a rich, silky saturation and are great for environments where the lighting and reflections have been carefully thought through. Lustre prints have a bright, sparkle-like finish that diffuses reflections and are therefore more versatile for environments where the lighting and reflections are less under your control.

Your print comes with two certificates of authenticity hand-signed by the artist and the printmaker: one that you will affix to the finished piece and one that remains standalone. Additionally, your print's provenance is tracked and verified using state-of-the-art digital technology. Learn more.
