There are few experiences as breathtaking as watching sunrise over Japan from the two-and-a-half mile high summit of Mt. Fuji. Climbers who make it to the top are some of the first people on earth to greet the new day, given their height and longitude. I had the good fortune of being one of those people perched atop the summit crater rim on July 9, 2012.

Despite being the middle of the summer, it was blisteringly cold - the type of cold that bites through every layer of protection you have on. As those of us on the summit sat in darkness awaiting the warmth of the sun, everyone was surprisingly quiet. We were exhausted from a full night of hiking the steep back of the ancient stratovolcano from a camp lower down. As the sun peaked over the horizon, the stillness that filled the thin air was thick with awe.

I debated whether creating a photo of this near-religious moment would violate the sanctity of it, but the desire to share this beautiful scene with others spurred me to start pressing the shutter.
