Photo Release: “Dreams of Battery Park City” by Dan Piech

The Battery Park City neighborhood in lower Manhattan is built entirely from reclaimed land. Only a few decades ago, the area still belonged to the Hudson river. Consequently, the usual flow of traffic and activity throughout the city, evolved from centuries of city planning, generally doesn't route through the neighborhood. Therefore, Battery Park City is an unusual area of peace and quiet amid the never-ending din of lower Manhattan. It is for this reason that I love photographing it...

Photo Release: “Good Morning, Central Park” by Dan Piech

Sometimes breaking the rules is worth it. The view of the Billionaires' Row skyline from Sheep Meadow in Central Park is one of my favorite views in the city. The direct juxtaposition of the park and the city, seemingly on top of one another, is not seen as profoundly anywhere else. It's especially powerful for the week of the year when the autumn foliage is at its peak and the sunrise rays come from far enough north to be reflected off the buildings. Unfortunately, Sheep Meadow is closed behind tall fences during this time...

Washington DC's many reflecting pools represent fantastic opportunities to capture the stunning monuments and parks that populate the city. They do this especially well during the gloaming, which is the time of day when the very last traces of twilight remain in the sky...

Photo Release: “Dubai at Dawn” by Dan Piech

Dubai is an architect's playground. Fanciful buildings dot the landscape in every direction. This complex of residences is known as the Executive Towers. What struck me about these buildings is that every one would be the centerpiece tower of an average American city and yet they didn't particularly stand out amid the other Dubai skyscrapers. As the sun came up over the desert and streaked between the towers, the sky filled with a wispy haze of clouds...

Photo Release: “Billionaires’ Row” by Dan Piech

57th street, just south of Central Park in New York City, is also known as "Billionaires' Row" due to the record-breaking real estate prices its new buildings command. I set out on an autumn evening to capture the skyline of Billionaires' Row from Central Park, amid the warm glow of fall foliage illuminated by the park's streetlights...

Photo Release: “Manhattanhenge” by Dan Piech

My favorite phenomenon in New York has always been the two days of the year in May and July, popularly dubbed "Manhattanhenge," when the days' final sun rays are suddenly aligned with the grid of parallel streets that populate midtown Manhattan. This floods canyons that are usually shrouded in dark shadows cast by imposing towers with the warmth of the setting sun...

Photo Release: “Winter in the Sierra Nevada” by Dan Piech

The Sierra Nevada certainly have mountains that are objectively more impressive than these. However, as the sun was setting on a late-winter day, I noticed the pleasing balance of trees and snow throughout this scene. Many mountains have either treeless tops or tree-covered tops. These were speckled with trees, however - great material for a VAST Photo...

Photo Release: “Japan Awakens” by Dan Piech

There are few experiences as breathtaking as watching sunrise over Japan from the two-and-a-half mile high summit of Mt. Fuji. Climbers who make it to the top are some of the first people on earth to greet the new day, given their height and longitude. I had the good fortune of being one of those people perched atop the summit crater rim on July 9, 2012...
