Photo Release: “San Francisco Blue Hour” by Justin Katz

The “blue hour” is that brief but magical moment of twilight, either early in the dawn, or late in the dusk, when the sun is at a significant distance below the horizon and the residual, indirect sunlight takes on a predominantly blue hue. My goal was to create a VAST photo capturing San Francisco at that special moment - but first I had to find the perfect location...

Photo Release: “Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe in Winter” by Justin Katz

The road that bends around Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe is a truly spectacular drive. The two-lane road hugs the hills above the shoreline of the teardrop-shaped bay at the southwest part of the lake. Because this road is situated on such a steep slope, it is closed for the majority of the winter, due to the risk of avalanches cascading down the mountainside at any moment. It is for this reason that the only way to get to this spot during the most beautiful time of year is by way of a snowshoe trek...

San Francisco holds an endless trove of hidden secrets that most of the 16.9 million yearly visitors will never get a chance to experience. Most will visit the major attractions, and the occasional few will uncover some of its off-the-beaten-path areas, but there are many areas that are generally only really known to locals...

Photo Release: “Golden Gate North Tower” by Justin Katz

The Golden Gate Bridge connects my current home, San Francisco, with the county to the north where I grew up, Marin. It’s southernmost point, Battery Spencer is an old military bunker designed to protect against enemy ships attempting to enter the San Francisco Bay. As such, it has a commanding view of the famous Golden Gate Bridge and the entire surrounding area...

Photo Release: “Sunset in Eastern Sierras” by Justin Katz

The high desert of California is significantly underappreciated. The vast majority of people who have ever encountered this bizarre landscape, only do so in passing. They drive through the small towns on highway 395 with the mountains in the distance, and don’t even think about stopping. It’s for this reason that I was pretty excited to head down the Alabama Hills for a shoot with the production crew of CreativeLive...

Photo Release: “Norwegian Fjord” by Justin Katz

There are some shots you plan for, and some that are extremely unexpected. My first trip to Norway was planned almost entirely as a photography trip, but I don’t think I fully understood what I was getting myself into. Norway is the single most scenically gorgeous country I have ever traveled to, and I don’t say that lightly. But what surprised me was that on my road trip across the fjord countryside, the destinations I had planned were only half as interesting as the journeys in between...

Photo Release: “Hanalei Bay, Kauai” by Justin Katz

If you have ever traveled to Hawaii, you know that there is no shortage of breathtaking scenery. Each island is vastly different from the others in terms of landscape, and general feel. They all have different precipitation levels, plant life, geology, and terrain, making them all distinct and unique. After this most recent trip however, I decided that Kauai is without a doubt my favorite of the islands...

Photo Release: “SF City Skyline” by Justin Katz

The San Francisco Bay Area has an endless bounty of beautiful locations to take photos of. This is one of my favorite aspects of living here. Some locations are more easily accessible and therefore more commonly photographed, while many are relatively unknown or require a bit of exploring to be able to find...

Photo Release: “Geirangerfjord, Norway” by Justin Katz

Norway is the single most scenically gorgeous country I have ever visited. Part of what makes it so incredible for a landscape photographer, is the pace at which the scenery can change dramatically. One moment you will be driving through a lush green valley with giant waterfalls on either side of the road and the next you ascend to a slightly higher elevation where you find snowy baron hills that resemble a moonscape...

Living in San Francisco means that you are very frequently confronted with the fact that your home is a major tourist destination. There are just so many places where you find visitors from all over the world, stopping to take a picture of some gorgeous view. The “City By the Bay” is located on a geologic fault line, which means that there is no shortage of scenic overlooks, dramatic views, and picturesque locations...
