The Cascade Mountains of the Pacific Northwest are among the most expansive in the lower 48. This presents endless opportunities for exploration, but it also presents challenges in terms of finding viewpoints from which to digest the enormity. Yet, nature saw fit to solve this challenge in the form of a line of volcanoes stretching from northern California to the Canadian border. The volcanoes are taller and more prominent than the rest of the densely populated peaks, and offer lofty vantages from which to enjoy the surrounding landscape for hundreds of miles in any direction.
A late summer morning found me around 11,000’ high on a route called Ptarmigan Ridge on the NW side of Mount Rainier. The low sun of the morning played with the lazy summer haze in each of the countless valleys, and gave depth and dimension to the amazing topography stretching all the way to the rugged peaks of North Cascades National Park.
These moments of wonder are why I choose to call this part of the world my home.
