Norway is the single most scenically gorgeous country I have ever visited. Part of what makes it so incredible for a landscape photographer, is the pace at which the scenery can change dramatically. One moment you will be driving through a lush green valley with giant waterfalls on either side of the road and the next you ascend to a slightly higher elevation where you find snowy baron hills that resemble a moonscape. Then, before you know it, the windy road takes you back down into a gorgeous fjord.
I knew that the view of Geirangerfjord was a shot that I needed to capture, but I wasn’t quite expecting the overwhelming sense of scale that we were about to encounter. The drive itself was spectacular, with every turn of the road offering some new perspective and vantage point on the large body of water and surrounding mountains. When I found the lookout point that had the most expansive view of the entire fjord, we stopped the car, set up our gear, and waited for the clouds and the light to be just right.
I attempted to capture this shot in what felt like a hundred different ways. How do you demonstrate the immense scale of a location like this? In order to convey how truly large this Norwegian fjord is, I realized it would be essential to include the human components of this scene in the final image, such as the town on the far left side of the frame. Additionally, if you look closely at a number of places in the water, you can see small motorboats making their way through this gigantic waterway once carved by glaciers. Those multiple human elements helped me to establish this sense of scale, and showcase the dramatic nature of the mountains and waterfalls of this incredible location.
